SPC vs WPC Flooring: Which Suits a Texas Room?
June 10, 2026 6 min read By Fort Worth Flooring Co
SPC and WPC sit next to each other in every showroom, often in the same range with the same surface print, and most people choose between them on price without being told what the letters mean. In North Texas that choice has a consequence.
What the letters stand for
SPC — stone-polymer composite. The core is limestone powder bound with PVC. Dense, rigid, hard underfoot.
WPC — wood-polymer composite. The core is wood flour bound with PVC, usually foamed. Lighter, thicker for the same rating, softer and warmer to stand on.
Both are genuinely waterproof cores. Neither absorbs water and neither swells, which is the real difference between either of them and a laminate.
The property that decides it here
Thermal expansion.
WPC has a foamed core with more air in it and it responds more to temperature change than SPC does. In a room that stays within a normal comfort range that is irrelevant. In a room that gets genuinely hot behind glass, it is not.
North Texas has rooms like that. A sun room, a converted garage, an enclosed porch, or a west-facing living room with a wall of glass reaches temperatures in August that a bedroom never sees. A floating floor in that room expands, and either it has enough gap to absorb it or it lifts at a wall.
SPC holds its dimension across that swing considerably better. That is the practical reason to choose one over the other, and it is a reason almost nobody is given at the point of sale.
The other place SPC wins
Slab tolerance.
A rigid stone-polymer core spans a minor imperfection in a slab more forgivingly than a flexible core, which flexes into a dip and works the joint above it.
That matters across a good deal of this county. The 1960s and 1970s slabs through Haltom City, Watauga, Bedford and older Arlington have had five decades to settle slightly dished, and even after grinding there is usually some residual deviation.
This is not permission to skip flattening the slab. No plank fixes a substrate outside tolerance. It does mean SPC is the more tolerant specification for an older house.
Where WPC is the better choice
Comfort, straightforwardly.
WPC is warmer underfoot, quieter to walk on, and considerably more forgiving to stand on for a long time. In a kitchen where somebody cooks every evening, or in a bedroom, that is a real quality-of-life difference and it is not a trivial reason to choose it.
It is also gentler on dropped items, and slightly better acoustically in a room with hard surfaces.
If the room is temperature-stable and the slab is flat, WPC is a genuinely good choice and it will not disappoint anyone.
What actually matters more than either
Two things outrank the SPC-versus-WPC decision entirely.
Wear layer. Twelve to 20 mil is light residential; 20 to 30 mil and above is commercial grade. This decides how long the floor looks new, and a 12 mil SPC will look worse in four years than a 20 mil WPC. For a family house with dogs, or any rental, 20 mil is the sensible floor.
Whether the slab was prepared. A perfectly specified plank over an unmeasured slab is a floor with separating joints. An adequately specified plank over a properly flattened slab is a floor.
If you have a budget decision to make, spend it on the wear layer and the preparation before you spend it on the core type.
The short answer
Sun room, converted garage, enclosed porch, west-facing room behind glass, or an older slab: SPC.
Bedroom, study, north-facing living room on a flat modern slab, where comfort underfoot matters: WPC is fine and pleasant.
And in either case, 20 mil wear layer if there is any traffic at all.
